The Fueled By Ramen Intern IMPOSSIBLE Interview #8
Subject: Dan Parrott, eCommerce Marketing & Customer Service Coordinator
Interviewed by Rachel Cutler, Digital Marketing Intern
Describe a typical day in the office. What do you look forward to most about work?
My day is split into the three areas that my job covers. #1. I handle customer service. If you got a problem with an order in the webstore then I am the guy you will talk to. I’m answering emails, tweets and phone calls all day to make sure you are having a positive experience in the webstore. Really if you are mad or unhappy I am too because I hate it when things get messed up. #2 I am scheduling and planning out the promotions and launch of all the merchandise that Melissa and Amy are making. I love this part of my job. Melissa and Amy are so good at making incredible merch and I love being the one to put it online for everyone. I receive a sample of everything we make and it always feels like I am unwrapping a new gift when I get the box. I put in my opinions on new items and help with preorder plans as well. I love coming up with creative ways to promote the webstore like The FBR Summer Games Sale this year and creating the theme to The FBR Holiday Sale! I’ve also done some fun merch videos. Like the Valentines Day one HERE. #3 I help Adam and the Digital Marketing Team daily as well. I make sure we have news posts scheduled each day. I compare notes with Adam to see what new videos and content he has to post about and then fill in any holes with unique stories and things like Monday Morning Lyrics, $5 Friday and this Impossible Interview Series.
How did you come to be at Fueled By Ramen? What made you want to be here in the first place?
I knew I wanted to work with Fueled By Ramen when I held RIOT! in my hand. It was the main thing I wanted for Christmas that year it released. I swore I would work for the label and band that gave me that music gift. I have to give credit though to Gotee Records who gave me my first shot in the music industry. I interned with them one summer and on my last day they said “So… What do you think about coming in now a few days a week and we will pay you?” I obviously jumped on it. I worked hard and they started giving me more hours and letting me come in more days. I was the Marketing Assistant for 2 years while bartending and serving in Nashville on the side. It was hard working at Gotee in the morning and then working till 12 or later at a restaurant but totally worth it. A friend of mine sent me a link to the FBR position that was available and I applied. Gotee sent over a glowing recommendation and then after a few interviews FBR gave me about a 5 days notice that they wanted me to start. I accepted the job on a Thursday, sold everything I own in a Garage Sale that weekend and then started working in NYC 5 days later. I came to the city with 2 suitcases and nowhere to live. It was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.
What is the weirdest/most shockable FBR moment you’ve experienced?
Weird things happen all the time in this office, No joke! As I sit here responding to these questions Adam just wheeled Katie by my office door in a rolling chair and sprayed dust destroyer at me. It was a ‘wheel by spraying.’ That was shocking. #FBRMoments Actually one of my favorite moments was when Thom was coming around a corner and I was standing there with a blow horn and set it off when he turned the corner. He fell straight backwards and I laughed a long time after that.
If you had to pick one song to wake up to every single day for an entire year what would it be?
I really want to say something like Otis Redding so that I sound cooler but If I am being honest it would likely have to be ‘So Much Love’ by The Rocket Summer or any song from the Do You Feel album. That whole album I have a huge connection to in general and I’d love to wake up in the morning to anything from it.
If you were still a kid, and someone asked you “what you want to be when you grow up” what would that be? If you could would you still do it?
When I was a kid I think I just wanted to work on the beach at a tiki stand waxing surf boards. Not that I can even surf. I think I got that dream from Zack Morris of Saved By The Bell. I still think if this whole music thing wasn’t working out I would move to Fiji or some island and become a cabana boy. Serving cocktails in a sarong.
